“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness”. Likewise what good is to walk on the fair ground if you haven’t tasted the pleasure of walking on the ice. Chadar trek or the Zanskar river trek will give you a previlage of walking not only over the snow but over the thick sheet of ice with water flowing below it. The Zanskar river which is a connect to Zanskar region and Leh freezes in the winter on which the trail happens. It is the shortest route when all other means of transport are barricaded by the winter snow.

A ‘Chadar’ is a rectangular piece of cloth that you sleep on or cover yourself with. Hence, Chadar. The trek primarily is a winter trail done mostly in the month of January and February when the temperature falls below -15 to -42 degree centigrate. Its not just an ordinary trek rather one of the toughest which tests even the courageous ones. The trail takes about 9 to 10 day on which a person has to walk a distance approx of 105Km on a narrow pathway formed over the frozen river with high cliffs standing tall on both the ends. The trek will not only enthral you but also keep you spell bounded with some scenic views of frozen waterfalls, hanging icicle, glaciers and much more. The experience is something beyond words and will be with you till your last breath. When you close your eyes and will think of the trek, it will still give you the same pleasure and the eminence that might have chilled your bones at that time.

The trail is astounding and to make your expericence even more remarkable we have a team of highly trained professionals who knows the mountain by heart and breaths with it. They even can sense a small change in the patern of the surroundings and will keep you enthralled and safe at the same time. Safety is of a primary concern and we’ll take care of you while you hustle with the mountain to test your courage.

Day 1 & 2: Reporting day at Leh (3500m./11,562ft.)

The trek will get you amazed from the day one itself when you will reach into the town of leh. It’s the starting point of the trek which is a town situated at an altitude of about 11,562 ft and had served as a stopover for the traders trading along Indus valley between Tibet to east (China) and Kashmir to the west (India) since ages.  You will be given a day or two for getting acclimatized with the surroundings before the trek will start. When u reach in leh drink water as much as u can it will help u to get acclimatize and used to your body and mind for coldest temperature.  Your stay in the town will be arranged in a guest house. Your welcome in the town wouldn’t be an ordinary one, rather an exceptional by the white snow covered cliffs, coldness of the winds kissing your cheeks and little ladhakians running over the streets, giggling and smirking with warm smile on their faces. The day of arrival is considers as a resting day. It is important to get accustomed to surroundings before starting the hike.

Day 2nd will be a day of explorations primarily for you to get introduced to the surroundings known as Acclimatization in which you will be discovering the streets of Leh and one of the most amazing landscapes .During your stay in the town you can explore the vividness of leh village and its riches. Leh is also famous for many monuments like Leh palace, Shanti stupa,  monasteries, Hall of fame (Kargil war memorial) and many more.

Day 3: Acclimatization / Medical Checkup Day.

Getting yourself medically examined for your physical fitness is the primary step before we could take you on. It decides whether you will continue further or not. The government officials will conduct some test and if you are declared fit we will take you further in this voyage.

Day 4: Departing from Leh to Gyalpo.

After departing from Leh by 9am, you will be travelling to ‘Gyalpo’ through ‘chilling’ where our 1st camp site is located. The journey till ‘Gyalpo’ will be a 4 to 5 hour drive which for sure  will be one of the most beautiful drive across Zanskar introducing you to a whole new world. It will feel as if you are driving into some wonderland or something through trodden and dusty roads. The car will take you to the farthest, till where the road ends before the long walk. This is your day when your first step on chadar. You will feel the chadar first time, which gives you life time memories. It will be the 1st day when you will be sleeping in a tent under the sky over the ice.

Day 5: Gyalpo – Tibb Cave. (Trek 8 - 9 km / 4-6 hours)

After spending a night in the cold of Shingra Koma you’ll be heading straight to out next stop which is called Tibb Cave.  On this very day your real trek over the ice starts. It’s a walk approximately of 5 to 6 hours before reaching to our next destination. In the morning before the beginning of the trail you will be served with a nutritious and a healthy meal with a cup of hot liquid to warm your gut up from the cold night in the tent. This particular patch that you will be walking upon holds some of the most beautiful frozen water bodies amidst high walls of mountains on both the sides, the origin of which is still unknown but indeed they are no less to keep you spellbound with their scenic beauty. They truly depict the harshness of the cold.

Day 6: Tibb Cave – Nyerak. (Trek 12 - 13 km. / 6-7 hours)

The Camp site at Nerak is the most awaited campsite of this trek and sets it sail alongside the Zanskar River. Nyerak is a remote village in Zankar village from which the nearest road is just 2 days walk afar. The walk from tibb cave to nyerak is slightly long in which you will be walking for about 7 to 8hours covering 12 to 13km approximate. There is one more thing about this campsite due to which it is the most awaited is the frozen waterfall of nyerak. The village is just few hours away from the campsite and you can visit there to buy some essentials from the local shops if required. The night at Nyerak will be the coldest in this trek will may fall up to -32 degrees. Hence, it is recommended that you should layer yourself most appropriately.

Day 7: Nyerak – Tibb Cave. (Trek 12-13 km. / 6-7 hours)

After spending the coldest night near the first village of Zanskar, your journey back to initial will start but you may experience certain changes in the way the chadar might have looked to you at first. Some layers might have been melted and some rocks might want to give you there introduction. When you will be retracing the trail back you will get to know why the Chahdar trek is considered as an unpredictable trail.

The night in the tent will be your last night under the stars and inside the tent. And you will already start to miss the adventure, the thrill of walking over a sheet with water flowing under, the coldness that you already will be accustomed to.

Day 8:  Tibb Cave – Gyalpo – Bakula – Leh (Trek 11-12 km. / 6-7 hours)

Some layers might have been melted and some rocks might want to give you there introduction. When you will be retracing the trail back you will get to know why the Chahdar trek is considered as an unpredictable trail.

As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey.

So here are some aspects regarding trek preparation:

Chadar Trek is one of the most thrilling & glamorous trek in the world. This trek is done in -15°C and -30°C which is one of the most challenging thing. You need to be mentally as well as physically prepared yourself to survive in such an atmosphere.

Your fitness is important although trek is not exhaustive. You need to cope up & be strong to handle such extreme weather conditions at this high altitudes. 3-4kms of jogging or equivalent workout to this is required. Increase your stamina by doing it every day for 1-2months. You need to increase you daily walk to make sure you do not strain yourself during trek. Additionally you can train yourself by avoiding hot water, warm clothes &blankets in your own city for couple of months before the trek. Plan the trek well in advance and start building your stamina, strength and lung capacity.

Acclimatization is important. You will get a day for this. Try and get acquainted with nature as much as you can. Avoid using heaters in room in Leh before the trek. Drink lot of Liquids (warm water, soup, tea) during trekking days. Embrace the climate & don't just jump inside blankets. Soon the climate will become bearable & it would be fun.

Physically – A trek demands physical endurance, to prepare for each trek you should work out a month before joining a program.  Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises.

Mentally – Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for a trek. Before joining any trek take pleasure in your daily routines, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions about the trek. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre trek assumptions are not worthy because once you join the trek and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trek conditions. And the physical drawbacks will affect the mind. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you trek. When you trek try to relax your body, especially your hips. If you’re on a winding downhill trail or on a panicking slant, think of each step as part of a simple dance and enjoy the natural rhythms that the terrain and your body can find together cautiously. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.

TechnicallyGear up yourself with perfect size trekking shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with some weight inside it, so you become used to carrying loads. Buy a trekking pole, water bottle, warm socks, thermals, fleece, feather jackets, trousers, poncho,  flip flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera).

Communication at Leh - The postpaid no. such as Airtel, bsnl will work in Leh.  But any prepaid network will not work in Leh. On the trek signal die’s out after an hour and on the way there are less chances of network.  The information of any situation about the trek is gathered by the trekking companies with communicating with  trekking guides, porters or the locals calls by satalite fones in case of emergency. medical camps satalite fones effective in such circumstances.

Clothing’s Every time if someone is going for a trek in the Himalayas he/she should be aware of the region and the climate. Put your warm cloths even if the weather is sunny for days. Because weather at heights is unpredictable it can change any moment, as a consequence one cannot have those warm clothes at that time. So don’t compromise with the clothing’s. It will impact the whole trek and spoil all your delightful times of being at the mountains. The temperature fluctuation at high altitudes is disastrous.  Most of the sickness pops out of the cold and if someone is not with proper clothing will face further hardships and distress. To enjoy a trek precisely one should be aware of the necessity of the clothing’s.

Don’t compromise with clothing. Feel cold , temperature , not enjoy the trek.

Don’t climb high, not going to pagong nubra before chadar trek.

Avoid instant gain of height - One is strictly advised not to go to Pagong and Nubra valley in Leh before Chadar trek. Because these places are travelled by the vehicles and the height is gained very fast than the trekking. Our body needs some time to become favorable with the heights. Reaching up to the high altitude places directly could lead to a calamity or odd situation. So it is advised that one can go to such high places after the Chadar trek. Trekking takes time to reach one place to the other and person is acclimatized better by travelling short distances. Completing the Chadar trek will make one fully acclimatized to the area. Then one could approach to any high places without any distress.

Go high sleep low - In trekking there is a popular and practical word amongst adventurers ‘ Go high sleep low’ which means trek longer distances and have less sleep. This method of travel in the mountains is most effective mostly in the multi day treks, where one has to cover long distances and these distances are often trailed in the early mornings. Because in the early hours weather remains stable which in the afternoon changes dramatically.

Food intake on trek - Food is necessity of human beings and going for an adventurous activity doubles this need. Trekking demands physical and mental strength and this strength comes from our routine diet. This diet could be less or much, but taking bellyful meal helps trek better and stay healthier. Usually on treks people tell about increase in their diets, that’s because of the physical struggle and burning of calories. So eat as much food as you can.

Natural calamities excluded  - The weather in the Himalayas is changing now and then. No one could exactly predict the weather in here. As Himalaya is the mountainous region the approachability is only by the roads. If weather is bad the roads are effected first and then the other things. So in any case of natural calamities or road blocks or any other problems occurred due to weather, company would not be responsible for any case regarding treks, bookings or refunds. We will only be responsible for the trekking arrangements, managements and touring participants safely on the trek. But any casualty caused by the participant himself will not be our responsibility. Evacuation costs will stick with the casualty.

Medical Issues - For trekking every adventure companies demand the participant to fill medical form diagnosed by the well qualified Doctor’s.  Any medical issue belongs to ones responsibility. Medical fulfilling is must for a trek, because no one knows about the past of any participant’s health. If any health related issues are hidden it would be ones carelessness of not letting others know about the fact. If any medical issues occur it will be total responsibility of the casualty to take over all the expenditure. Company will not be accountable.

Drug/Alcohol prohibited - Any kind of alcoholic drinks, drugs is strictly prohibited. Use of these things at high altitudes could cause one his life. The company representatives will take sufficient measures if someone is caught drunk or with any type of drug. The person will be disqualified from further activities and will be sent back in between the course of trekking.

Pre arrangements Porters, Rooms - Some people can’t load their weight at their own, for this there is availability of porters. But it can be arranged only if the needy has spoken about it earlier as 10days. Along with it if participant needs extra accommodation or change in arrangements like customized room, food, traveling plans in surrounding, porter costs etc. porter will cost 1000/- per day.

Moreover with the appointed guides and crew members, the fun went further ahead. Entire Hampta Pass itinerary provided by Himalayan Adventure Trips was planned in a very convincing way and was very fulfilling in every aspect. Totally satisfied with Team HAT. Thanks a lot Himalayan Adventure Team.. for making this trip a memorable one for one and all. Awesome job by all the tour operators and service providers. Thank you for making this a great experience...

Snow Camping was perfectly organized by HAT. We were a group of 15 people from Kerala and came for some small hike with Snow camping. We had an awesome experience in the woods , location can't be any better and food was also freshly prepared for us. Tea was served as we wanted which is really good for us in cold. Thanks team Himalayan Adventure Trips

Even though not as popular as other trekking agencies, these guys were very professional and conducted one of the most difficult treks in an Excellent way. The trek leaders, support staff and the cooking staff were excellent. They really run the trek on their shoulders. I remember the cooking head was saying to me that he has done pin Parvati nearly 50 times and there hasn't been any incident whatsoever, I realized it why. The technical staffs really did amazing job to get everyone cross the difficult and risky boulders and tricky sections. Appreciate the whole team. The management team though can improve on communication and advertising more.

Yunam Peak is open for those who look for a High Altitude challenge. Its duration is short compared to the others of comparable height. One is on foot only for 2 or 3 days. One part of the walk is entirely loose stones/boulders, the other part is just snow. Himalayan Adventure trips provide comfortable accommodation before and after the trek at their campsite in Naggar. Their trek guide was competent and the other members were proficient in the work they had to handle.

It was my first trek and I choose Sar Pass trek as suggested by Himalayan Adventure trips representative. They also helped me with my packing and preparation for the trek which was really useful. I was able to complete trek successfully with a little difficulty since it was my first trek, but everything was very organized with good food.

It was a nice short & sweet trek...one way trek was around 4-5hrs depending on your speed..it’s an easy trek, if anyone doing a trek for the first time, I would highly suggest to start doing 30min walk /run daily starting 3weeks before the planned date. In the end don’t forget to enjoy every step:D Come back with some great experiences to share !! Cheerio :)

This trek is the place and the trek to take , if it all you have any doubts on your physical capabilities or want to challenge your body and mind together! What a trek it was! The hardest route, the most difficult terrain and the longest hike I have ever done. Still, this is my best! Our family did it together and it is our best one. We had the longest route - 45km and it took almost 5 days to complete. It was a night trek and we scaled during the midnight amidst moonlight and snowing. What a thrill

Such magnetic place which would attract you from miles away. It's attraction would not be light even if you reach up to it and walk on it. Just a nature's marvel which makes everything else look smaller and worthless in front of it.

A trek treat on Himalayas. So much of knowledge about the other side of mountain life seems to have made a tad richer in experience and of course the humility and good lessons to lean on to that only mountains can teach.
