  • Wanting to climb at decent height’s, the altitude that matters in mountaineering stage, so here’s  your  chance to conquer the peak with less technicalities the “Mentok Kangri”.  It is a summit requiring no special efforts yet demands adequate physical strength and prior trekking experiences over 5000m. It could be an ideal introduction to those looking forward to live some moments at significant altitude, an altitude which is obtained moderately. The Mentok Kangri situates in the renowned Changthang region of Ladakh in India. It comprises of three Mentok peaks I (6250m), II (6210m) and III (6150m), positioning one after the other. Mentok in Tibetan means ‘flower ‘and Kangri is a ‘Ridge’ or a ‘Mountain’ so it is a called “flower mountain” in Tibetan.  All three peaks can be attained in multiple attempts or can climb the preferred one depending on one’s true grit and determination. Mentok peaks rise above remote Changthang plateau just above the western ridge of Tso Moriri which offers distant views of secluded highland villages inhabited by Changpa herders, wild animals such as Kiang, Blue Sheep, Tibetan Antelope, Foxes, Wolves, Hares, Pikas and the mysterious Snow Leopard. The route presents broad valleys, narrow canyons, windy passes, inert lakes and ultimately the deserted countryside. During this expedition a close encounter into the isolated lives of Changpas their hardships in the vast harsh lands can be experienced inevitably. Changpas passion to live life without a question at such kind of adverse settlings morals one to live life lively wherever one belongs to and gives true respect to the homeland.
  • We will spend some time acclimatizing in Leh and then start driving from Rumste village located below the Tang lang La to Karzok, on the banks of Tso-Moriri Lake. We will set up our base camp at around 5250m just above the lake and remain training and acclimatizing for upcoming days of climb. The approach to the summit is steep at the end but don’t need any technicalities besides some ropes could be fixed on snowy slants for extra caution. It is only the rise of altitude that demands one to climb on his steady pace. Finally the day will arrive and we will attack the summit in early hours. After tiring effort we will make it to the top of Mentok Kangri I where vast Changthang Plateau will offer magnificent views of TsoMoriri and Tsokar Lake. Along to it if you outlook the surrounding peaks you will see Mentok peaks, Chamser and Lungser Kangri towering above 6600m.
  • Mentok Kangri is not a proper technical peak but needs precise preparation and mountaineering skills to conquer it. It doesn’t mean that less technicalities will ease the climbing yet the altitude rise will make it tougher. Therefore sufficient strength and mental preparedness is must to summit such high altitude peak.

Preparation

Preparation for the Climb

As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey. Expeditions are tricky sometimes way far from coinciding, so it is necessary that only people with prior trekking experiences above 4500mtrs completed for 4-5 times or should have done Basic Mountaineering course are invited to join in the incredible mountainous tour.

So here are some aspects regarding Expedition preparation:

Physically – An Expedition demands a lot of physical endurance, to prepare for each Expedition you should work out a month before joining a program. Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises. There are times when you have to climb even for 20hrs in single attempt, that’s how you should be prepared pushing yourself beyond limits and it only can be achieved by defined training before and en route.

Mentally – Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for an Expedition. Before joining any Expedition get pleasure from your daily routines, exercise, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions preplanned strategies about the Expedition. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre expedition assumptions are not worth to worry, once you join the March and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trip conditions and the physical drawbacks will affect the mind somehow. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you climb each campsite. When you climb try to relax your body focus on the training you have done and focus on the trail or some precipitous route to negotiate carefully. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.

Technically- Gear up yourself with perfect size trekking/climbing shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with as much weight as you can put inside it, so you will become used to carrying loads for long distances. Buy a Trekking Pole, Water Bottle, Warm socks, Thermals, Fleece, Feather Jackets, Cap, Trousers, Poncho, Flip Flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera) along with you. Get a sling to practice the major knots used later on the climb.

Climbing a peak is always as staggering as its sheer challenges, opting combination of accurate preparedness will fruit you with glorifying summit attain. So prepare yourselves honestly and join in the Himalayan Adventure Trips Expedition to Mighty mountain Mentok Kangri.

The title of this review should speak for itself, but if you are the kind that wants to get into details: All I had to do frankly for make one phone call and everything else was just already laid out on the day that I arrived in Leh. The best equipment, the best climbing guide and kitchen crew and the team's attention to detail with the logistics meant that all I had to do was put one foot in front of another and climb a damned mountain. Since this was two years after I had climbed last which too was with RockyFeet in 2019 for Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse II - The team at HAT arranged for a quick recap of climbing techniques and got reacquainted with the tools on the walls outside of Leh during the acclimatization day. I strongly recommend HAT so that they can take care of the technicalities and logistics while I can focus on the adventure.
