  • Moon Peak is a beautiful summit perched in Dhauladhar Range of western Himalayas  in abundant valleys of Kangra. It is a moderate peak climb for the neophytes looking forward to achieve altitude about 4650m. The altitude may be underrated by some passionate mountaineers to call it a climbing expedition, but the rise of the mountain and steepness offers all the aspects of climbing a peak. Moon Peak comprises of moderate level of technicalities requiring adequate strength and endurance. It is a mixed climb of rocky ascends steep traverses and a strenuous summit attempt. As the Moon peak locates in the rich flora and fauna of Kangra district ornamented with tea estates herbal medicinal plants great landscapes fascinates one to experience the abundance of varied atmosphere. Moon peak in the Dhauladhar range divides two districts of Kangra and Chamba, often famous for their shepherds, who had discovered most of the trailing routes between far flung regions. Although Moon peak route was also a shepherds trail detouring from the Indrahar pass to Chamba valley in search of better pastures, had now been opted by adventure seekers as a trekking or climbing route to find acme of the Dharamshala region. One can see the Moon Peak right from the start of the trek, rising ferociously through the clouds. The immense force during birth of the Himalayas can be seen on this particular peak, which on one side drops greatly to the plains of Kangra valley and on the other snowcapped mountains surrounds the Himalayan grandeur.
  • The trekking starts from Mcleodganj, a tourist spot famous for its Buddhist monasteries, Tibetan cuisines historical sites and the varied foliage of Cedar wood, Pine, Oak and Rhododendron trees. At initial trail leads on moderate hill climb through fabulous Deodar and Rhododendron trees spread consistently till the alpine range. The route opens the spectacular vistas of lower valleys decked with greenery intermittently. Soon the days trek is over at Triund, a beautiful ridge heightening about 2970m., a popular site packed with tourists day hikers campers and pilgrimages. Triund offers spectacular views of the valley below stretching far across the region. Following day climb above the Triund ridge over rocky surfaces to Laka Got, a shepherds encampment situated along to the snout of a glacier. After Laka Got climb turns steep on ice and scree which is later followed by rocky ridgeline till Lahesh Cave. At Lahesh Cave we will prepare for the summit and wait for the weather window. The summit attempt will pass through thesheer steepness of Indrahar Pass and then traverse over the rocky ridgeline covered with snow drops dangerously on each sides. On this patch of climbing up and down the rocky ridgeline requires ultimate consciousness and prudency. The final ascend is over stones and rocks which remains till the top as if the top is also a rocky pinnacle. As the summit is attained one can see mighty Manimahesh Peak towering in a distant, PirPanjal range and numerous snow laden peaks stretching across the region. Soon after descending is commenced cautiously to the lower camps and back to the city.
  • Moon Peak offers all kinds of atmospheres from crowded city life of Dharamshala, Mcleodganj to the tranquility and magnificence of Triund and to the sheer steepness and hardship of the Moon Peak. All aspects of adventurous sportsmanship could be experienced in this short route of climbing expedition. Usually expeditions demand a lot of effort in terms of equipment edibles and tedious planning, but being a moderate level of climbing Moon Peak must be the perfect choice to opt as a start in mountaineering.

Preparation for Moon Peak Trek

As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey.

So here are some aspects regarding Moon Peak Trek preparation:

Physically – A trek demands physical endurance, to prepare for each trek you should work out a month before joining a program.  Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises.

Mentally – Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for a trek. Before joining any trek take pleasure in your daily routines, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions about the trek. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre trek assumptions are not worthy because once you join the trek and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trek conditions. And the physical drawbacks will affect the mind. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you trek. When you trek try to relax your body, especially your hips. If you’re on a winding downhill trail or on a panicking slant, think of each step as part of a simple dance and enjoy the natural rhythms that the terrain and your body can find together cautiously. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.

Technically- Gear up yourself with perfect size trekking shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with some weight inside it, so you become used to carrying loads. Buy a trekking pole, water bottle, warm socks, thermals, fleece, feather jackets, trousers, poncho,  flip flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera).
