  • Mt. Nun is the highest peak in the Zanskar region of Ladakh in isolated Suru valley. It comprises of two neighboring peaks soaring in the well known Nun Kun Massif. Mt. Nun is a worthy opponent presenting sheer sides dropping about 6000ft from south and nearly as much from the north, almost forbidden except east and west ridges. Mt. nun is a tough expedition covering incredible distances, terrains, moraines, ice fields, huge crevasses and dangerous slants requiring ultimate strength and determination.
  • The expedition starts from Tangole village through rocky and deserted lands to the base camp. The base camp is a barren land surrounded by colorful flags fluttering in the wind. We will spend some days at base camp to get favored with the atmosphere. In the meantime sufficient loads will be transported to the higher camps. After few days of acclimatization we will climb towards camp I located at 5440m. It is a difficult route exposing one to the unknown obstacles laying ahead. Steep ascents covered with scree and moraine the huge crevasses deep enough to take hundreds of people at once, icy slants all test one’s true grit before having a glimpse of great peak Mt. Nun. After negotiating ice slant and deep crevasses it is a gradual ascent towards camp I. After establishing camp I we will climb towards deceptive heights through larger crevasses slants. Climbing higher route involves zumaring on steep slopes of ice and rock for hours. After hours of strenuous climb we will reach on a ridge least enough to pitch few tents. It is a dangerous narrow ridge which drops thousand meters to the left and requires one to be anchored all the time even when nature calls.
  • The camp II will be fixed somewhere around 6150m. Now the climbing towards summit camp arrives with moderate slants and difficulty. Summit camp will be fixed at 6600m. Further from the final camp route presents mixed slants of rock ice and snow up until the top. The final ascent traverses over 60 degree ice slant to access west ridge of the Nun peak. After gaining west ridge route follows a stretch of soft snow for about 300m. The slant eases a bit but the sinking of feet may cause fatigue whilst climbing final ascent. The top of the peak is fairly sharp and requires adequate safety and security during the climb. As reached at the top take photographs whilst cheering the conquest at 7135m and start descending cautiously from the same route.
  • Descending down doesn’t take so much effort yet the correct provisions are compulsory for a safe descend. It will take half the time to reach lower camps than taken on ascending. Soon we will reach the base in couple of days descend and will cheer up the success in rather favorable atmosphere. Meanwhile all the stuff will be winded up and trekking back to the civilization will commence. In few days we will back in Leh city wandering around the mall and eating the food we missed during this great isolation of Mt. Nun expedition.
  • Graded as a difficult trek, this peak is suited for climbers who are experienced with basic mountaineering and can handle extreme weather conditions. One should carry all essentials and be proficient with cramponing on sheer snow slopes.

Preparation

Preparation for the Peak Climb:

As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey. Expeditions are tricky sometimes way far from coinciding, so it is necessary that only people with prior trekking experiences above 4500mtrs completed for 4-5 times or should have done Basic Mountaineering course are invited to join in the incredible mountainous tour.

So here are some aspects regarding Expedition preparation:

Physically: An Expedition demands a lot of physical endurance, to prepare for each Expedition you should work out a month before joining a program. Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises. There are times when you have to climb even for 20hrs in single attempt, that’s how you should be prepared pushing yourself beyond limits and it only can be achieved by defined training before and enroute.

Mentally: Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for an Expedition. Before joining any Expedition get pleasure from your daily routines, exercise, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions preplanned strategies about the Expedition. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre expedition assumptions are not worth to worry, once you join the March and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trip conditions and the physical drawbacks will affect the mind somehow. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you climb each campsite. When you climb try to relax your body focus on the training you have done and focus on the trail or some precipitous route to negotiate carefully. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.

Technically: Gear up yourself with perfect size trekking/climbing shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with as much weight as you can put inside it, so you will become used to carrying loads for long distances. Buy a Trekking Pole, Water Bottle, Warm socks, Thermals, Fleece, Feather Jackets, Cap, Trousers, Poncho, Flip Flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera) along with you. Get a sling to practice the major knots used later on the climb.

Climbing a peak is always as staggering as its sheer challenges, opting combination of accurate preparedness will fruit you with glorifying summit attain. So prepare yourselves honestly and join in the Himalayan Adventure Trips Expedition to Mighty mount Nun.
