As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey.
So here are some aspects regarding Everest Base Camp Trek preparation:
Physically – A trek demands physical endurance, to prepare for each trek you should work out a month before joining a program. Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises.
Mentally – Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for a trek. Before joining any trek take pleasure in your daily routines, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions about the trek. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre trek assumptions are not worthy because once you join the trek and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trek conditions. And the physical drawbacks will affect the mind. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you trek. When you trek try to relax your body, especially your hips. If you’re on a winding downhill trail or on a panicking slant, think of each step as part of a simple dance and enjoy the natural rhythms that the terrain and your body can find together cautiously. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.
Technically- Gear up yourself with perfect size trekking shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with some weight inside it, so you become used to carrying loads. Buy a trekking pole, water bottle, warm socks, thermals, fleece, feather jackets, trousers, poncho, flip flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera).
KATHMANDU TO LUKLA TO PHAKDING (DAY 1) -
Day one will begin with an incredible flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The flight gives you spectacular views of the Himalayas before you touch down at Lukla Airport, one of the most famous and scariest airports in the world. The landing strip is on a downward slope and gives you a thrilling shiver moment on take-off and landing. After landing, you'll have a quick coffee with some snacks and look around Lukla before making the short and relatively flat trek through the beautiful villages and forest to reach Phakding. This is an easy start so make sure to enjoy all the greeneries, floras, and faunas as you walk. The trail takes you over several suspension bridges and along the Dudh Koshi river. Enjoy the rest of the day at Phakding.
PHAKDING TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (DAY 2 & 3) -
After Phakding, we move towards another beautiful destination, Namche Bazaar, which is inside the Sagarmatha national park, After Phakding, we move towards another beautiful destination, Namche Bazaar, which is inside the Sagarmatha national park, a UNESCO world heritage site and it is actually known as the last frontier for trekkers and climbers before the trek to EBC starts to get serious. Passing through the dense luscious forests of pine, juniper, Rhododendron, climbing the stairs, enjoying the fury of rivers at some points, and mostly walking uphills are the major activities of the day’s trek.
NAMCHE TO TENGBOCHE (DAY 4) -
Having settled in Namche, we set foot on the way to the valley of Khumjung, also known as the green valley because of its dense vegetation. You follow the rocky tracks, the steep hills, the uneven terrain. This trail is a mix of constant ripple which means that you will climb nearly 900 meters of inclination throughout the day. The path then heads down into the valley floor as you lose a lot of elevation. However, you will then cross the river and regain all the altitude as you get closer to Tengboche monastery where you will spend the night. Tengboche monastery is one of the most popular monasteries among Buddhists around the world where you can join in for prayer ceremonies and rest for the day. from Tengboche you can expect to have views of the mighty mountain Ama Dablam as well as Lhotse, Nuptse, and even the peak of Mount Everest from there. Interestingly this will be one of the best views you have of Mount Everest until you reach Kala Patthar in a few days time.
TENGBOCHE TO DINGBOCHE (DAY 5 & 6) -
After spending the night in Tengboche, we begin our trek for the day to Dingboche where we will stay for the following day to acclimatize. It's a beautiful day as you travel across the valley as the glacier river flows down while the snowy peaks weave away. Along the hike, you will stop for tea in the village of Pangboche with plenty of views of the mountain Ama Dablam. The altitude gain of this day is 700 meters and the complete journey will take approximately 5-6 hours at a moderate pace. Dingboche is 4,400 meters above sea level, so it is common to start experiencing some altitude sickness symptoms at this stage of the trek. We will also make short hikes in the area to get an amazing view of the greatness of the mountain and help your body acclimatize. The idea is to hike high and sleep low, which helps the body adapt.
DINGBOCHE TO LOBUCHE (DAY 7) -
Once we have acclimated in Dingboche, we will travel towards another stunning destination, Lobuche. Lobuche which is at the height of 5050 meters from the sea leave and the trek can take 5-7 hrs time and the distance you'll cover for this trek will be roughly around 8 km. First 2 hrs of this trek will give you a feel of walking in Heaven. It is so beautiful. Surrounded by Peaks like Amadablam, lobuche, tabuchi and you can have a closer look of them which you had seen
in Namche bazaar. The journey starts with a climb to the ridge behind Periche until the tea houses at Dughla followed by a steep ascent to the terminal moraine of Khumbu Glacier. You will encounter a series of stone monuments made in the memories of climbers who couldn’t make it back home. We will reach the memorial of Scott Fisher and 10 times Everest summiteer Babu Chhiri Sherpa who remained in the mountains.
Following a walk of nearly 5-7 hours, we reach Lobuche, which is an isolated village of Sherpas. It is the final village with lodges on this trail to Everest. After relaxing at Lobuche, we take a short jaunt to the surrounding mountains to enjoy the scenery.
Great Peaks like Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori, and Mahalangur Himal are clearly seen during the trek on this trail. With the end of the Khumbu Glacier, you can also see Mt Nuptse laying towards the right.
LOBUCHE TO GORAK SHEP TO BASE CAMP (DAY 8) -
The route from Lobuche continues to descend the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and then ascends a small slope to reach Thangma Riju, which offers a 360 degree view of all giant mountains. After a steep climb through the Changri Glacier, glimpses of Kalapatthar and Pumori are visible. After a short lunch break, we head towards the Everest Base Camp. Walking the whole trail requires 8-9 hours of strenuous walking, and it is about 13 km long. But the best part is: enjoying the grand views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and many others in the background we finally reach the base of the world’s highest mountain. After spending some time at the base camp, we must return to Gorak Shep to stay overnight.
GORAKH SHEP TO KALAPATTHAR to PHERICHE (DAY 9) -
The best part about the Everest Base Camp is the view one can admire from the top of Kalapatthar.
The ascent of Kala Patthar provides the most accessible closeup view of Everest. Despite the
structure of the Everest Massif, much of its surrounding region is obscured by Nuptse's high summit. Kala Patthar offers spectacular views of Everest, Nuptse, and Changtse. In the distance, Lhotse can be seen smoking from the northern flank. Kala Patthar is considered the highest altitude most will reach without a climbing permit. Our trek starts early in the morning, since the wind gets cold and dry throughout the day. We must reach the top of the mountain before sunrise, because that's where the tranquillity lies. The beauty of the giants when the golden rays of the sun touch the white snow is truly breathtaking. We spend some time at Kalapatthar before leaving for Pheriche, a small settlement that has basic accommodation where we can rest overnight. This day will cover a distance of approximately 16 kilometers.
PHERICHE TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (DAY 10) -
We wake up early to a beautiful morning breakfast then we head towards the Khumbu Khola.
Our trail leads us through Tsuro Wog, Orsho, and Pangboche, passing through various villages along the way. Then we cross the bridge over the Imja Khola and pass through the Debuche village towards Tengboche. After a short climb, we descend to Namche where we will stay for the night. Today we cover a distance of around 20 kilometers.
NAMCHE TO LUKLA (DAY 11) -
We follow the same route back to Lukla. Stopping at Phakding for lunch we reach Lukla to rest for the day. We cover a distance of 19km and walk for about 7-8 hours.
