As you know Kullu Manali is amongst most recurrent valleys of the Northern Himalaya beholding numerous trails and treks treaded repeatedly each year. Though Bhrigu Lake trek is no far different of them, it could be a perfect weekend trek for someone finding an undemanding trekking in the Himalayas, in startling Gods country.
The Bhrigu Lake perches atop of the mountain range lapping serenely amidst Rocky Mountains elongating far away from Vashisht to the Kothi mountain ranges. It is an ideal trek for those without any prior experience of being in the high altitudes, to a decent height of 4250m, a considerable mark for a neophyte to achieve. The slopes during the climbs are filled with foliage and wild trees fostering and assisting the landscape to strike one consecutively.
The trail is commenced few turns after Gulaba, last habitat of the vale. Then at last turn we drop out of our vehicles and tread above a steep gradient. From the point of starting trail goes upwards gradually accompanying with all varied slants throughout until the destination is attained. The trek offers grand views of the valley as we ascend above the meadows, rocky, terrains, ice and glaciers. The route is overall gradual inspite the last sheer climb of loose rocks and boulders leading towards the lake could be a challenge. The Lake is invisible till we reach above the ridge across boulders stones slanting curvaceously. Eventually the Lake emerges in front laying impeccably in between the rocky mountains of sand and scree which is fed by torrents of snow and glaciers flowing down to converge an inert pond . The Lake isn’t that large in dimensions but just oval shaped quiescent water reflecting varied hues all the day long. It is not about the dimensions of the lake but the immaculate beauty of its location at such atmosphere. It is believed that the Sage Bhrigu used to meditate near or in the vicinity of the lake, spending years of profound austerity. Hence the lake is rendered to be sacred by locals and is repeatedly visited by the correlated dwellers occasionally. It is a holy place though one should not litter or go near the lake with any leather items. Atop at the lake one will see the huge mountains erecting fiercely through the clouds such as Indrasan (6200m.)Hanuman Tibba (5900m.), Deo Tibba (6001m.), Ladhakhi peak (5577m.) and so on the ranges. During Bhrigu Lake Trek weather behaves impulsive throwing gushing winds, freezing temperatures Rain and Snowfalls, an atmosphere of least adversities at the high altitude above 4000m. Besides it the overall trek is performed in a contented manner descending to a different ridge line making it an amazing trail towards Vashisht through Pandu ropa, a vast alpine pasture. The route we opt towards Vashisht completes the trek comprehensively by relieving all the fatigue having tripped through the dense forests to the hot Sulphur water bath. The stress and the filth accumulated during the trek can be removed by taking hot bath leaving one rejuvenated. The trek ends at a perfect place where one can dip in the springs in the heavenly ponds then eat the food they might have missed during this wilderness. Here at Vashisht the trek will end and one will be free to stroll around or away.
Day 1: Arrive at Manali(2050m) – Drive to Gulaba (2600m./8530ft.)– Trek to Raoli Kholi (2950m./9700ft.)
Arrive Manali early morning; here you will be greeted by our representatives. Then drive towards Solang valley up until we cross the barrier, and then after few turns the trail has arrived. We get off, take our stuff and start climbing up the trail which is steep indeed. It is a gradual slant on the meadows trailing circuitously through the lush forests to alpine meadows. The hiking presents subsequent change of landscapes throughout the day and offers distant views of the valley. As we climb higher up the forests vast scenery starts captivating the viewer. After 3 hours of climbing we approach at our first campsite Raoli Kholi. It is located just aside the treeline a better campsite than higher ones where wind is freezing cold. We will fix our camps here at Raoli Kholi and sleep for the night.
Day 2: Raoli Kholi – Bhrigu Lake (4240m./13910ft.)- Raoli Kholi 7km. 6-7 hr
This morning we start early as the day is long to approach Bhrigu Lake. The trek consists of mixed terrains gradual inclines moderate walks and then the ice and scree covered with snow. First we will hike up steep till the moderate trail comes and then follow the moderate trail to an open field surrounded by bald mountains and a freezing cold stream. After this section trail steepens once again leading up into the top of ridgeline. It is a short stretch of distress followed by moderate walks after this ridge. The grand vistas will amaze one throughout the trek till we approach the last section of the climb. The gradient is filled with huge boulders stones, ice and snow making it a bit difficult. As we climb up on these rocks the height keeps gaining and air gets thinner causing one with some signs of altitude sickness. But that’s all right it is a natural reaction of our bodies at such heights unless one is severely ill. Once we have completed this hard patch we will trek for some more ridges, the gradient flattens and flattens presenting the alluring Lake in front. The lake is invisible till the last point of approach because of its crater like forming, perches amidst the Rocky Mountains. It is located on a mountain range which starts rising from a busy town of Vashisht all the way up to Bhrigu Mountains. The lake is meant sacred as Maharishi Bhrigu has meditated here for years and got enlightened. The lake is visited by the locals each year on occasions while trekkers keep trailing all year long. The lake is deep and sacred though one shouldn’t litter or use leather materials around the vicinity of the lake. Apart from that site offers magnificent sceneries of most celebrated mountains such as Hanuman Tibba, Indrasan and Deo tibba. We will have our lunch take photographs then retrieve back to our camp site same way down. One should remember walking down could be fatal if you are not attentive to the trail, you could slip or twist your ankle. So avoid doing foolishness and keep eye on the slants. Once this tricky portion of rocks and boulders is crossed you can walk at ease on the grassy slopes. Soon we will approach our campsite by the evening where hot cup of tea would be waiting for us. Once reached relax in your tents have dinner and spend the final night of the wilderness.
Day 3: Raoli Kholi – Pandu Ropa (3450m/11318ft.) – Vashisht (2070m/6790ft.)
Today we will eat well and start descending down to the Vashisht through Pandu ropa. The route is moderate traversing a beautiful slant on the right side of the camp at Raoli Kholi. During descend we will enter into the vast meadows of Pandu Ropa, a striking site filled with miniature plant life. From here on we will trek sideways till we reach the forest and enter into the foliage. The forests will accompany us all the way down to the habitation. Soon as we approach close to the village forests will lessen and paddy fields and apple orchards will take place. One can have a glimpse of the grandeur of Manali valley while climbing down the mountain. Our destination to end the trek is at vashisht, a hot water spring. Somehow we will reach at Vashisht by the evening where one can have a hot bath inside ponds located just aside the temple. These hot springs will relieve one out of stress fatigue and filth after days of isolation. At Vashisht our trek ends and here on you are free to stay or leave to further programs.

As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey.
So here are some aspects regarding trek preparation:
Physically – A trek demands physical endurance, to prepare for each trek you should work out a month before joining a program. Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises.
Mentally – Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for a trek. Before joining any trek take pleasure in your daily routines, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions about the trek. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre trek assumptions are not worthy because once you join the trek and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trek conditions. And the physical drawbacks will affect the mind. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you trek. When you trek try to relax your body, especially your hips. If you’re on a winding downhill trail or on a panicking slant, think of each step as part of a simple dance and enjoy the natural rhythms that the terrain and your body can find together cautiously. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.
Technically- Gear up yourself with perfect size trekking shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with some weight inside it, so you become used to carrying loads. Buy a trekking pole, water bottle, warm socks, thermals, fleece, feather jackets, trousers, poncho, flip flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera).
