  • Chaukhamba, the four pillars lies in the Gangotri glacier of Garwal Himalayas in Uttrakhand state of India. The magnificent Chaukhamba Massif has a 30km long ridge which has 6 summits and Chaukhamba I is the highest among them.  The peak was first summated by a French expedition in 1952 and later scaled by an Indian team in 1967. The Chaukhamba peaks are challenging and require high level of technical skills.
  • The expedition starts from Mana village to Bhagirak Kharak 15000ft, the base camp held after some transit camps. Further from the base route is hazardous filled with rock fall areas. We will transfer loadsto the ABC and establish it subsequently. Once all the loads are ferried ABC is fixed at 16000ft. Further from ABC we will carry on transferring loads to the camp I. The route leads through ice walls crevasses and avalanche prone area by fixing hundreds of meters climbing ropes for a safe traverse. Soon we will reach the campsite suitable for Camp I. We will dump the loads and establish camp I. After camp I we will put our first steps on Bhagirak Kharak glacier and hike through lateral moraines. We will traverse the glacier on south west direction and enroute one can identify the junction of the small unnamed glacier created from the ice fall of Mt. Chaukhamba I and Bhagirak Kharak. We will establish our camp II at 18000ft. The route towards camp III is graded as difficult due to icefall, low visibility caused by inconsistent weather and requiring thousands of meter ropes on dangerous slants. We will reach at the top of snow slope after hours of tiring effort and will fix our camp III at 20,000ft. Next day we will recce the upper slopes of camp III and start climbing roped up and belaying towards camp IV. Climbing turns slow as we work on eased slopes of knee deep snow slant. Few hours later we will reach at the 150ft ice wall slanting to 70 degree gradient. We will negotiate the obstacles and pitch our camp IV at 22,000ft. It will be our summit camp and in early hours we will attack the mountain. The route to the summit is a mixture of snow slopes, ice walls and hidden crevasses. After a grueling and exhausting climb we will reach at the top of Chaukhamba I at 7318m. We will take photographs and will remain for some time at the top of mighty peak. Finally we will descend carefully to the summit camp and to the lower camps. Soon we will reach the base and so on to the road head.
  • Overall the Mt. Chaukhamba peaks are the most technical peaks found in the Garwal Himalayas. Mt. Chaukhamba can pay a significant role and provide vast range of experience for those looking to climb world’s highest 8000ander peaks. It can be an ideal introductory and can assist to understand the high altitude weather, terrain and the sheer challenges that remain unpredictable on all tough climbing’s. Preparation of Chaukhamba Peak

As you know every mountainous excursion demands a precise planning, a planning with adequate pliability of observing and tackling situations, held all as by overcoming mind body and soul throughout the incredible Himalayan journey.

So here are some aspects regarding Chaukhamba Peak preparation:

Physically – A trek demands physical endurance, to prepare for each trek you should work out a month before joining a program.  Build up the adequate strength in your legs by running and exercising every day to boost up your endurance. Stop smoking and boost your lungs doing breathing exercises at routine basis two times a day, which will help acclimatize the conditions while being resilient on the trek. Take active part in outdoor games, Yoga and any other cardiac exercises.

Mentally – Mental preparation is key, equally as important as physical training requisite for a trek. Before joining any trek take pleasure in your daily routines, eat well, take rest properly and relax. Do not stress your mind by unnecessary predictions about the trek. Be with your best friends to get motivated and relax your mind. Because pre trek assumptions are not worthy because once you join the trek and meet with rest of the pack will bring encouragement and excitement. The mental preparedness will build through the entire trek conditions. And the physical drawbacks will affect the mind. So pay close attention to various parts of the body and consciously let them loosen up as you trek. When you trek try to relax your body, especially your hips. If you’re on a winding downhill trail or on a panicking slant, think of each step as part of a simple dance and enjoy the natural rhythms that the terrain and your body can find together cautiously. Experiment with different ways of walking as a way of finding enjoyment beyond the goal of reaching a destination. The main key to stay mentally fit is to enjoy the route and not to pressurize the mind.

Technically- Gear up yourself with perfect size trekking shoes and walk with it. Use 60ltr. Backpack in a daily routine with some weight inside it, so you become used to carrying loads. Buy a trekking pole, water bottle, warm socks, thermals, fleece, feather jackets, trousers, poncho,  flip flops, electronics such as power bank, camera (DSLR or digital camera).
